There are sectors which are discovered on the street, then thrown in dumps and then rediscovered. Probably, in the last three years, the street is more in a mood to rediscover the sectors. On top of the rediscovery mission is the power sector. This rediscovery has happened after a gap of close to 15 years and probably companies and their promoters have learned many lessons. 

Indian markets are full of such examples, Power in one such sector, between 2005 and 2008 a number of new players entered into the power sector, right from established industrial houses, to new companies without any experience in the power sector. Anything to do with power got valuations which were unheard of in that sector. Very soon, there was a u-turn on the street, with power stocks becoming the worst performer. The reason, a large number of these companies got stuck with legal cases, due to coal issues and the captive mine case hit them very badly. At the same time, there was a surge in global coal prices, making things difficult even more.

On the operational side, the power sector being regulated both at central and state level faced multiple headwinds at various points of time. Some time delay in payment plays havoc with the cash flow and if the balance sheet of the company is leveraged or the cost of the borrowing is very high then it becomes a major trouble. That happened with all of them, a number of ultra mega power projects were stuck with court cases and the operational issues.

UltraTech Cement outperformed in Q1 2024 despite challenges. Cost reduction plans, capacity expansion, and strong financials position it well for future growth. The stock's appeal to investors is supported by diverse strengths.

UltraTech Cement reported a better-than-expected performance for the March 2024 quarter notwithstanding the demand weakness and sluggish cement prices during the period. The country's largest cement manufacturer has chalked out plans to add capacity while retaining its edge as a low-cost producer by improving process efficiency. 

Analysts believe that better cost control would improve UltraTech's competitive edge over peers. This will be advantageous given the anticipation of demand improvement in the second half of FY25. According to estimates, demand will remain weak in the first half of FY25 given the general elections and the monsoon period. Another factor that augurs well for the company is the organic and inorganic capacity addition. In the second half of FY25, it will add Kesoram Industries' capacity of 10.75 million tonnes. It also plans to add another 10 MT in FY25 to its current capacity of 146.2 MT.

For the March 2024 quarter, UltraTech's revenue of 20,430 crore exceeded analysts' expectation of 20,083 crore while net profit at ₹2,260 crore beat the average estimate of ₹2,127 crore. Also, the Ebitda at ₹4,113 crore was around 12% above the Street's estimates.

The way things have panned in the last one month, it is clear that bulls are not in any mood to leave the street. The pattern of the sectoral rotation is visible. Yesterday, it was banking which led the rally while there was a correction in real estate. Today it is auto stock which is leading the rally. Clearly the under current is bullish and if there is no major description coming in, then it is very likely that bullish trend is likely to continue. Trucks taking trains! This is how Amul milk is reaching you faster and cheaper:

The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India is putting trucks on trains to transport products such as Amul milk from Gujarat. Is it a win-win situation for both road and rail networks?

This is not a very common sight in India - trucks moving on trains. And the potential of this method in reducing logistics costs is yet to be unlocked.

The Dedicated Freight Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) is attempting to do just that. As part of its new service, the wholly owned enterprise of the rail ministry is carrying trucks on railway rakes on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor. The truck-on-train service is popularly known as RORO or roll-on/roll-off service.

DFCCIL is currently running the RORO service on a stretch between New Rewari in Haryana and New Palanpur in Gujarat, potentially eyeing business from leading milk producers in Gujarat who send hundreds of trucks from the state to the national capital region (NCR) every day. For example, Amul sends about 200 to 250 trucks via road from Gujarat to Delhi every single day.

Loaded/unloaded trucks move up a ramp onto rail wagons, forming a rake which is hauled to the destination. Prior to moving into the wagons, trucks are weighed and passed under a height gauge to make sure they meet the guidelines. Once the train reaches the destination, trucks can roll off, and move to the end point. In short, while the truck takes care of the first mile and last mile of goods movement, the train takes care of the rest.

India's National Highways Authority is likely to use a Dutch technology to combat the menace of potholes:

Worried by the rising number of potholes on the national highways and large maintenance cost incurred year-after-year, the National Highways Authority of India - NHAI - is exploring the use of self-healing materials for constructing roads.

This is not just a case of fixing the bad roads of today. It may be a much-needed intervention as extreme weather patterns because of climate change are expected to trigger faster deterioration of roads in the future.

As defined by the industry itself, Asphalt is a mixture of aggregates, binder and filler, used for constructing and maintaining surfaces like roads. In many cases, asphalt is a mixture of gravel and sand held together by bitumen, a thick, viscous mixture that is derived from petroleum.

Asphalt is a natural healing material that can recover its original properties by molecular diffusion when not in use or under high temperatures, especially given time.

It must be highlighted that while the name self-healing tech is a slight misnomer since it does need an external machine which creates inductive energy to be effective. That said, the usage has become popular across the world.

According to a report in The Verge, self-healing asphalt could cost about 25% more than regular asphalt but will help the Netherlands save EUR90 million annually in repairs if all roads in that country were to be made with it.
