Maruti suzuki's Jimney going ahead:
Jimny a volume product is not on its agenda. While this strategy is in sync with the fact that off-roading is a small but upcoming segment in India.
Fifty years is a long time by any yardstick. Many changes occured in our lives. But one thing that hasn't changed in the last five decades is the iconic status of the Suzuki Jimny among off-roading enthusiasts globally.
So, at the Auto Expo 2023 in January, when Maruti Suzuki finally unveiled Jimny in India with the promise that the 4X4 off-roader would "never turn back", the euphoria was unmatchable.
The company was swamped by bookings even though the price was kept under wraps. Till deliveries commenced in June, bookings touched a whopping 30,000. And understandably so. By the time India got the feel of the Jimny brand, the four-wheel drive SUV, first introduced in 1970, had sold over 2.8 million units in 194 countries.
At present, in India Jimny retails 2,500-3,000 units monthly compared to 5,000 units sold by its immediate rival, the Mahindra Thar. Maruti puts Jimny's wholesale numbers since the launch till September at 12,604.
To be sure, this is the fourth-generation Jimny in its five-door avatar, a first for the vehicle. Suzuki launched thefourth generation three-door version globally in 2018.
Shashank Srivastava, senior executive director-sales and marketing, Maruti Suzuki India, says for now making the Jimny a volume product is not on the
agenda of the mass-market carmaker.
Srivastava says Maruti will ramp up production capacity for the Jimny and how fast the company can establish the Jimny brand in the domestic
market.
