For a large number of investors, volatility is something which is determined by what happened to the nifty by the end of the day and they associate it with decline in indices. But there is more to it, on Tuesday, because there was a decline, it might appear to be volatile. But the fact is on wednesday because Nifty and Sensex recovered and gained back the losses, these two days together make it a volatile market. 

We look at companies, where there has been an improvement in overall analyst scores. This improvement could be because of any reason, but the fact that they have seen an improvement in their score is an indication that some headwinds have come down for these companies. It could be on the price performance part or earnings part of the matrix on which scores are calculated.

We take a look at stocks which have shown outperformance in the phase of volatility in the nifty of the last few weeks. Outperformance can be measured in a couple of ways: either the stock has not fallen as much as the Nifty or it has been able to move up even if the index has slipped southward and when Nifty witnessed a recovery, it was among the first to gain. Also when the stocks are able to move faster then nifty or the index which they are part of.

These midcap stocks with 'strong buy' & 'buy' recos can rally over 20%:

 The way mid-cap stocks have
performed in the last few days, it appears that a rotational correction is taking place. The only solace is that the street is rewarding the stock if there is any positive development which indicates that there is still fresh money which is on the sideline which moves into those stocks.

While it was an interim budget with no change in taxation laws and many other parts, for some sectors it was literally a full budget. The reason, the announcements made for them were pretty similar to what has been done in the past when a full budget is presented. So, when an announcement about fisheries, animal husbandry or rural housing is made, the companies in the whole chain will get impacted in a similar manner had these announcements been made in a full budget. 

When it comes to companies which are in the very niche industry where the overall market size is optically large but in reality is it fragmented and price sensitive, it is extremely important to look at each company carefully. profitability, better product mix may reverse weak trend in Maruti's stock:

Maruti is likely to report a record high EBITDA of Rs 76,000 crore per vehicle given a richer product mix and volume growth. The earnings per share (EPS) is expected to increase to Rs 420 in FY24 compared with Rs 266 in the previous fiscal year.

Maruti Suzuki reported improved profitability for the December quarter aided by an improving mix of high-priced sports utility vehicles (SUVs) amidst moderating volume and rising discounts. The combination of seasonality and declining inventory suggests margins to improve in the March quarter. The stock has been underperforming due to moderating volume and elevated industry inventory. This may reverse with a stable margin profile, falling inventory, and comforting valuation.

On a sequential basis, rising discount, lower operating leverage, and higher advertising cost impacted the margin by 70, 110, and 30 basis points in that order suggesting a total negative impact of 210 basis points. However, the overall sequential drop in the margin was restricted to 118 basis points due to favourable raw material costs, lower royalty expenses and forex income.

The discount levels are expected to fall in tandem with the falling inventory. The product stock of Maruti with the dealer network dropped by nearly 1.2 lakh to 45,000 vehicles in the December quarter. The company had a pending order book of 2.2 lakh vehicles at end of December 2023 led by SUVs.

In the first nine months of FY24, the company's sales volume grew by 7% year-on- year to 15.5 lakh units. Analysts expect the current rate of growth to continue for the remainder of the fiscal year and may grow by 4-5% in the next fiscal year. The monthly volume run-rate is expected to be nearly 1.9 lakh units in the remaining three months of the current fiscal year to take the full year tally to 21 lakh units. It shipped nearly two lakh units in January.

भारत की सबसे बड़ी इन्फ्रास्ट्रक्चर कंपनी लार्सन एंड टुब्रो ने मूल्यह्रास और परिशोधन (ईबीआईटीडीए मार्जिन) से पहले ऑपरेटिंग मार्जिन के लिए वित्त वर्ष 24 मार्गदर्शन को 50 आधार अंकों से 8.25% -8.5% से 8.5% -9% तक काट दिया ।  प्रबंधन ने पहले मार्जिन में क्रमिक सुधार के लिए मार्गदर्शन किया था, ज्यादातर दूसरी छमाही में ।

तिमाही के लिए सन फार्मास्यूटिकल्स का राजस्व लगभग 10% बढ़ा, जबकि शुद्ध लाभ 16.5% बढ़ा ।  घरेलू और अमेरिकी बाजारों ने राजस्व में दो अंकों की वृद्धि दर्ज की ।  ऑपरेटिंग मार्जिन (ईबीआईटीडीए मार्जिन) 140 बीपीएस बढ़कर 28.1% हो गया ।  कंपनी हाल की तिमाहियों में एक मजबूत विकास प्रक्षेपवक्र को चार्ट कर रही है, जिससे पिछले एक वर्ष में स्टॉक लगभग 40% बढ़ रहा है.

Nifty IT index stocks: Time for contrarian buying?:

After a long phase of almost two decades, during Covid there was a sudden phase of expansion in price earning multiples which IT stocks were getting. Now as nothing is permanent on markets, a phase of mean reversion or readjustment of valuations started after October 21. It has been more than two years that largecap IT stocks have been going through this and after a gap of a long time, they are showing some early indications at worst might be over. 

Nifty IT index probably among very very few sectoral indices, which are still below the high they had touched in October 2021.
