 Amazon continues to bleed in India in its core marketplace business even a decade after entering the market. To be sure, rival Flipkart has also been largely unprofitable in its e-commerce marketplace business.

Amazon's losses grew to INR4,854 crore in FY23, up 33% year-on-year. However, total expenses saw only a 5% rise and the losses were largely on account of a higher depreciation.

Inside the news. The past year-and-a-half has been challenging for Bharat Pe, marked by various battles including legal disputes with former managing director Ashneer Grover amid reported issues of corporate governance. Nearly 18 months after Grover's ousting, the company has achieved its first- ever Ebitda profit, a significant turnaround from the monthly loss of INR60 crore reported not long ago. 
The key challenge is to get the right CEO, a pivotal position left vacant since the departure of Suhail Sameer earlier this year. Although chief financial officer and interim CEO Nalin Negi is acknowledged for stabilising Bharat Pe's operations, the company now requires a visionary leader, a 'zero to one' individual, to spearhead its growth from this point onward.

Byju:
The devaluation was highlighted in Prosus' financial report for the first half of FY24. This marks the second valuation cut for Byju's by Prosus. The H1FY24 earnings report also revealed a -24% internal rate of return (IRR) at Byju's, a stark contrast to the previous year's figures. Additionally, Blackrock, another investment management giant, also lowered Byju's valuation estimate by 62% to USD8.4 billion in the quarter ending March 2023. These markdowns occur even as Byju's is facing numerous challenges including board resignations, a probe by the Enforcement Directorate into alleged forex violations, and legal action by the BCCI for an alleged payment default.

Stock Radar:11% rally in a month! This heavy equipment maker is likely to surpass Rs 5,000 levels: 

The stock witnessed a breakout from a 1-month consolidation range seen on the weekly charts where Rs 4,800 acted as a stiff resistance, while on the downside Rs 3,900 acted as a support for the stock. It recorded a breakout from the said range last week when it closed at Rs 4836.

Hitachi Energy, a part of the heavy electric equipment space, has rallied by over 10% in a month to hit a fresh record high last week, and the chart pattern suggests that the rally may not be over yet.

Short-term traders can look to buy the stock now for a target of Rs 5,000-5,200 in 3-4 weeks, suggested experts.

The stock rose from Rs 4,314 as on October 23 to Rs 4,831 on 24th November, which translates into an upside of over 11% in a month.
The stock, which is a part of the S&P BSE 500 index, hit a record high of Rs 4,940 on 23 November.

Insights to kick-start the day,PhonePe's latest big move:

PhonePe is gearing up to launch its consumer lending products targeting a January 2024 release. Phone Pe had already initiated a pilot for digital lending services targeting its merchants in June. This follows PhonePe's withdrawal from the ZestMoney acquisition. PhonePe will face significant competition from app-based digital lenders Paytm, MobiKwik, and Slice. But it is actively seeking partnerships with various NBFCs and banks to kickstart its consumer lending operations. PhonePe's substantial registered user base of 500 million consumers and 37 million merchants could prove advantageous in attracting its initial loyal customers as it ventures into digital lending.

With transitions in automotive technologies, market demand is already under pressure. Further price hikes on vehicles will act as a deterrent to sales growth across segments. Steel price has been on the rise. According to Puneet Gupta, director, automotive, S&P Global Mobility, car prices are likely to rise as aluminium prices have remained near to their cost price. He expects vehicle prices to rise 1%-2% of the selling price of the cars depending on the variant, model, and automaker.

Meta ignored kids on its platforms for years, as per a lawsuit.

 A legal action against Meta charges that it misled about handling kids under 13 on its platforms. Internal documents suggest a more relaxed approach than publicly stated. According to the legal complaint by attorneys general from 33 US states, Meta has received over 1.1 million reports of users under 13 on its Instagram platform since early 2019.  It's alleged that Facebook intentionally designed its platform to lure in children. In India, 37% of 10- year-olds had a Facebook account, and 24% used Instagram in 2021, despite the age limit being 13. India must initiate a similar investigation on Meta's practices when it comes to kids.

The largecaps have 'strong buy' and 'buy' recos with upside potential of over 20%:


As the market opens for trading after a holiday, the first hour of trading would go into adjusting with what happened in global markets. The short term movement aside, one needs to take into account that in the next few days movement of the broader market indices like Nifty and Sensex and also the market breadth would be determined by the outcome of the state elections. Refinitiv's Stock Report Plus lists down quality stocks with high upside potential over the next 12 months.

As the stock prices kept moving upward, the number of the stocks in the list came down. Around the end of August they came as low as 3 this is exactly opposite of the start of April 23, when the list was at 25.

So, lower the number of stocks on the list, probably it is time to be cautious, more the number of stocks, the markets are in a safe zone. Four weeks ago there were 21 stocks much better than what they were for the last three weeks, but still below the level of 25 which was at a time when nifty was about to inch upward and it did. But in the last three weeks nifty was able to inch upward.

As the mid-cap once again make a comeback, it is time to keep some check and balance while participating in this phase of the rally.

So look for stocks where the return on capital employed and other parameters are good enough to ensure that small disturbances dont impact them much in terms of business.Stocks from sectors like small finance banks, FMCG.

At this point of time, it would be worthwhile to still be cautious with equity as an asset class. In terms of fundamental stocks where there is a certain level of return on capital employed.

In terms of price movement, if the stock has been able to have a positive one month return in this period it is worth bringing it to the watch list. The reason a large number of midcap stocks have been moving up is because of extremely high flows to equity markets, both from domestic and international investors. One part of these flows have dried up in the last few weeks. One would have to review conditions at regular intervals as valuations are extremely high.

Some of mid-caps have strongly out-performed the market while some are pretty much moved in line with mid- cap indices, which is a minor corrective move and then once again moving upward.

This tends to happen in a couple of cases only. First, there may be some fundamental development taking place in that company or sector, which is ensuring an outperformance. Secondly, these mid-cap stocks have already seen a correction and a consolidation, after which they are making an attempt to move upward.
