3 insights to kick-start the day!TVS going to Europe:


The stock of TVS Motor surged 4% on Friday. For years, TVS and Bajaj Auto have been exporting India-made bikes of global brands to Europe. TVS now takes the next big step forward and is going to sell under its own brand to European customers, beginning with France in January 2024. 

Thrasio, which kicked off the trend of roll-up e-commerce, wherein a company acquires multiple different online sellers and brands to integrate their operations, has been struggling over the past year. Its troubles coincided with Amazon's own slowdown last year, and the company also saw several top-level exits. Thrasio had also pulled out of its only India investment earlier this year when it divested from Lifelong India.

One more thing. The roll-up e- commerce space, also often referred to as the 'house of brands' model, has also seen several players in India struggling to take off. ET Prime had reported on the troubles in the sector earlier this year.


The path of least resistance. Nifty 50, the benchmark index, is up more than 1,000 points and just 1% away from making another lifetime high.

The language of price. The index corrected 7% from the highs of 20,200 levels to 18,800 levels, amid fears of the US going into a recession and the escalation of war in Israel spiking bond yields. It has very strong support in the 18,600- 18,800 range. After breaking out initially from this range, Nifty retested on this level for the first time. Then it bounced back sharply from the support zone of 18,800.

When oil prices rise, there are a lot of companies whose stock prices suffer because the narrative is that margins are going to get hit. But when oil prices decline, the recovery in these stocks is not at the same pace. But this time for a set of companies it was different. Cello World is trading firmly above high;buy, hold, or sell?

Cello World operates in a rapidly growing consumer segment and has better financial ratios than its rivals. While a smaller market share for writing instruments is a challenge for the company, having a diversified portfolio and protecting margins can help it continue the outperformance.

INR475 crore from four alternate investment funds (three managed by ICICI Venture and one by Tata Capital), which bought convertible shares of the company at a valuation of INR5,850 crore. Last Monday, it debuted on the bourses at a 28% premium to its IPO issue price. Though the shares have pared some gains since then, the company is currently valued at INR13,753 crore, up 2.4x from a year ago, and these institutional investors will hold an 8% stake post conversion of their shares. The promoter group, meanwhile, holds 78%.

On the listing day itself, two bulk deals happened in the counter with Plutus Wealth Management and Reliance Commercial Finance purchasing 12 lakh and 16 lakh shares at a price of INR801 and INR794, respectively. While such fresh demand came as a validation of the existing investors' bullish view, Cello World has seen some profit-booking of late. The stock is still trading 22% above its issue price but has slipped 6% from its all-time high of INR837 recorded on the listing day.

दिल्ली में इलेक्ट्रिक वाहन (ईवी) को और अधिक आक्रामक तरीके से आगे बढ़ाने की घोषणा से आईजीएल जैसे शेयरों पर दबाव आया। हालांकि इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि समय के साथ ईवी हावी हो जाएगी, लेकिन क्या इसका मतलब गैस कंपनियों का कारोबार खत्म हो जाना है? उत्तर संभवतः नहीं है, कई अन्य उपयोग के मामले हैं और नकारात्मक प्रभाव के बारे में कथाएं बहुत अधिक खींची जा सकती हैं।

This implies that there has been a significant improvement in their market outlook in the given time frame.

An announcement about pushing the electric vehicle (EV) more aggressively in Delhi, brought pressure on the stocks like IGL. While there is no doubt that over a period of time, EV will dominate, does it mean the end of the business of the gas companies? The answer is probably no, there are many other use cases and narrative about negative impact might be over stretched.


Utility stocks, like a power distributor or a city gas distributor normally don't attract much attention. What gets ignored is the fact that despite all the challenges which they face due to flip flop in policy, these companies are able to have stable income streams. They don't normally witness any sharp spike in profit but also don't witness any sharp decline.

After facing many headwinds, the gas sector had started to see some respite. Some impact of reforms undertaken by the government in the last couple of years is showing an impact on their bottom line. Now again, there are headwinds in terms of EV growing and getting a policy push. What might be getting ignored is that beside the sales to passenger cars through pumps, there is another chunk of business, which is supplying to home and also industrial uses, which at least does not face any technology or policy threat at this point of time.

One more thing which needs to be taken into account is that valuation adjustments have taken place in the last two years. Some of these stocks had done extremely well between 2017 to 2021. Now after a phase of consolidation, the valuations have normalised, rise in earnings have brought the price earning multiples down.

ICICI Bank's recent underperformances:


ICICI Bank shares have risen substar recent underperformance has more to do with macro factors than fundamentals aspiration to remain asustainable and profitable lender is on the right track.

In the last five years, shares of ICICI Bank jumped by a massive 21% annually,  Nifty 50 which moved up 13.5% annually.

Bakhshi became the poster boy of the banking industry.But the stock has been a laggard in the market in recent months.

In the last one year, ICICI Bank has offered 2.8% returns compared to nearly 8% 50 and 5% in Nifty Bank. Among the top five banks based on market capitalisati rose the most-21%. Rest three-HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, Kotak Mahin are down in the same period.

In fact, most large-cap banks are down but mid-cap or PSU banks managed to  improvement in their stock prices. Since November 2020, the Nifty PSU Bank in outperformed the Nifty Private Bank index.

According to analysts and fund managers, at the core of the underperformance is the macro picture rather than the bank's fundamentals. With interest rates m most banks have suffered as deposit rates started to toe lending rates, which we This put pressure on the net interest margins (NIMS) though profit growth rema NIM is a key profitability metric that measures the difference between a bank's income and interest expenses.


"If the stock price remains subdued when the performance is strong.

What happens if the bank doesn't deliver next year? Isn't it logical to expect a hvaluation today?" asks an investor in the stock for the last three years.

Insurance is one industry that got hit very badly and led to a situation where literally every company has to raise funds to meet regulatory requirements. But at the same time, awareness about the need to have insurance on which companies had been spending tons of money was created without them spending even a penny. 

So, while there was a short-term problem, a bigger issue of awareness got resolved. But then came changes in tax laws, which was another big blow. 


When it comes to the insurance sector, a number of times, the name of both life and non- life and health insurance companies is taken in the same breadth. While they all belong to the insurance sector, there is a world of difference between macro and micro factors which impact the bottomline of a life, non life and health insurance player.
