Low index option premiums are like Jezebel, sinking retail traders:

The derivatives market in India is 400x bigger than the cash market. For the US market, the same number is only 9x. Even South Korea, where retail participation is high in the derivative segment, the same number is hardly 12x.


Ramachandra and Depander are amongst the millions of options traders driving the market into a tizzy. Today, the derivatives market in India is 400x bigger than the cash market.

With the entry of online discount broking, several fee-based brokers went out of business. When Covid-19 happened, markets were volatile, and the old brokers spotted an opportunity to make money by selling options. There is nothing illegal about it. With this influx, IVs collapsed and premiums are low now. They will soon realise that yields are not sustainable at such premiums. So, some of them will exit the market at some point. When that happens VIX will increase," opines Rajesh Baheti, managing director of Crosseas Capital, a prop trading firm.

"In case of a black swan event, some of these option sellers may become buyers for a short span. But the trading activity will continue. They will not completely exit the market," Pasi predicts.


"NSE is mulling direct market access (DMA) for squaring off positions directly at the exchange if a broker terminal goes down due to heavy loads from trading volumes. They cannot enter new positions through DMA but at least traders will not be stuck with losses," says Rajendran.

Global demand has remained on the lower side in the past few months. India's gems & jewellery sellers can take relief in the strong festive and wedding season coming ahead.

India's gems & jewellery industry has seen a growing trend in the recent past. Lab-grown diamonds (LGDs) have established a niche for themselves among consumers who focus on affordability, says Vipul Shah, Chairman, Gem & Jewellery Exports Promotion Council (GJEPC).

From April to September, there has been a notable 25.76% decrease in the gross exports of gems & jewellery, which now stands at $15,231.27 million, in contrast to $20,515.47 million in the year-ago period. Looking at 2023-24, we anticipate a decline of 20% to 25% in gems and jewellery exports.

The GJEPC also spearheads several design-driven initiatives like the Design Inspirations trend-forecasting conference, jewellery workshops featuring thought leaders, trend books, and conducts its prestigious annual jewellery design awards called the Artisan Awards. The artisan provides a platform for jewellery designers to push their creativity and design aesthetics to showcase world-class pieces. 

The Artisan Awards has been attracting a lot of entries not just from India, but all parts of the world - thus establishing India's coveted leadership position in the jewellery industry.

The index NIFTY witnessed some volatility during the session on the back of weekly expiry. However, the index managed to end the session with a considerable gain.

The listed space in India, it is transportations companies which dominate. Logistics as a sector has seen many headwinds both in terms of operations and structural challenges. 

The list of the logistic companies is based on upside estimated by the analysts, with the highest potential stock coming on the top of the list. Right from a company that restructured its operations by selling some parts of business and then taking over another company to get into micro delivery space. 

The whole logistics sector has seen a major shake up. Now there are some operational tail winds which might help these companies. Primarily, two tailwinds, first the decline in oil prices from their highs and second increased economic activity. 

The third one which is seasonal in nature, the festive season, is getting added at this point of time. First nine months of 2023 have been much better for logistics companies. A number of logistics companies have made readjustments to meet challenges which some of the new age logistics platform companies have brought on the table in the last three years.
