The licence fees paid by telcos will be treated as capex, overruling the earlier Delhi HC order that categorised licence fees before July 31, 1999 as capex and as expense after that date. This will put an additional tax burden on telcos.
Pre-1999, telcos paid licence fees as a one-time fee, but after NTP 1999, under the revenue-share model.
Companies like Pixxel (USD71 million) and Skyroot Aerospace (USD67 million) too have raised a considerable amount this year for growth capital. Agnikul is a launch services company that aims to cater to the small-satellite market, the fastest growing segment globally. Their big challenge is to bring down the cost of access to space even further.
According to a 2018 study, the cost of launching 1kg to space had tanked from an average of USD18,500 at the turn of the millennium to USD2,720 in 2018. Much of that has got to do with innovation from the likes of SpaceX. This 2018 cost is likely to have gone down further by now. Agnikul's challenge will be to innovate and build a business model to make money at even lower levels.
One last thing. Smaller funds continue to spearhead the funding of Indian space startups. Celesta Capital, Rocketship.vc, Artha Venture Fund, Artha Select Fund Pi Ventures, Speciale Invest, Mayfield India have all backed Agnikul. The big name VCs have generally stayed away, as we observed last month.

India and the UK on Monday discussed possibilities for further collaboration particularly in areas of trade and investment, defence, critical and emerging technologies, civil aviation, health, and energy at the maiden 2+2 foreign and defence affairs dialogue. India has held such dialogues with key strategic partner countries like the United States, Russia, Japan, and Australia.
Rahul Roy Chaudhury, senior fellow, International Institute for Strategic Studies says, "It serves as a useful mechanism to boost both defence and Indo-Pacific ties in tandem at a time when they are more relevant than ever before."
